An original Cosmogram by American-born Parisian artist Louise Janin (1893–1997), created during the period in which she developed her distinctive experimental approach to abstraction. Beginning in the 1950s, Janin used fluid pigments, texture and controlled chance to create what she called “cosmograms”—works conceived as visual expressions of cosmic forces, inner states and the interconnectedness of the microscopic and universal.
In this unusually atmospheric example, dense passages of black, gray and muted violet spread across the paper in organic, almost geological formations, while vertical forms emerge at right like monumental cliffs or distant architecture. The work reflects Janin’s lifelong interest in spirituality, Asian philosophy and the translation of invisible energies into visual form.
A striking example of the highly personal abstract language that occupied Janin during the mature phase of her career. Stamped on reverse with Janin’s studio mark.
